Presbyterian Membership by Country: Statistics and National Profiles

A country-by-country view of Presbyterian membership, congregations, pastors, and dated national trends from church and ecumenical profiles.

Presbyterian membership is distributed across every major region, but the reported totals differ sharply by church and country. The figures below range from 1,083 members in Liberia to 4,000,000 in the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, alongside dated national reports from the United States, Taiwan, and Ghana.

North American benchmarks

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) provides a dated sequence for active membership in the United States. Its IV-B1 Comparative Summaries of Statistics 2024 reports 1,193,770 active members in 2021, followed by 1,140,665 in 2022, 1,094,733 in 2023, and 1,045,848 in 2024. The same 2024 report records a net active-membership change of negative 48,885.

These are PC(USA) active-membership figures for the United States and should not be read as a combined total for every Presbyterian denomination in the country. They also belong to specific reporting years. The sequence is useful because it shows how a single denomination’s membership benchmark changed over time, while the international profiles below generally provide undated current or legacy figures.

The World Council of Churches profile for the Presbyterian Church in Canada lists 125,500 members. The same undated current profile, accessed September 30, 2026, lists 1,000 pastors and 980 congregations. Those three figures describe the Canadian church profile; they are not a national total for all Presbyterian bodies in Canada.

Latin American and Caribbean profiles

The World Council of Churches profile for the Presbyterian Church of Colombia lists 12,000 members. It also lists 47 pastors and 45 congregations. These numbers are from an undated current profile accessed September 30, 2026, so the profile’s measurement date is not supplied.

The World Council of Churches profile for the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago lists 40,000 members, 17 pastors, and 105 congregations. Like the Colombia figures, these are profile figures rather than a dated annual series. The difference between the two profiles also illustrates why country comparisons should retain the church name and reporting context instead of treating every number as a harmonized national census.

For a compact comparison, the two profiles report:

Church profileMembersPastorsCongregations
Presbyterian Church of Colombia12,0004745
Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago40,00017105

The membership figures are therefore not interchangeable with a count of all Christians or all Protestants in either country. They refer to the named Presbyterian church in each source profile.

East Asian membership

The World Council of Churches profile for the Presbyterian Church of Korea lists 2,852,311 members in the Republic of Korea and 8,162 congregations. A separate profile for the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea lists 334,520 members, 830 pastors, and 998 congregations. The similar names identify different church profiles, so their figures should remain separate.

The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan reports approximately 257,550 members and approximately 1,271 congregations for 2020. “Approximately” is part of the church’s reported description, and 2020 is the supplied measurement year. It should not be combined with undated profile figures as if all were measured at the same time.

The Korean entries are especially important for interpretation. A country label alone does not identify a single Presbyterian membership total: church names, denominational structures, and profile definitions matter.

African Presbyterian membership

The supplied World Council of Churches profiles show a broad range across African Presbyterian bodies. The Presbyterian Church of Cameroon profile lists 1,800,000 members and 500 pastors. A separate legacy entry for the same church lists 531 pastors and 1,540 congregations. Because that second entry is labeled legacy, the pastor and congregation figures should not be presented as independently verified current measures.

The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria profile lists 3,806,690 members. The Presbyterian Church of East Africa profile lists 4,000,000 members and 450 pastors. The Presbyterian Church of Mozambique profile lists 24,000 members and 42 pastors.

The Presbyterian Community of Congo profile lists 2,500,000 members, 672 pastors, and 926 congregations. This is labeled an undated legacy profile. The Presbyterian Church of South Sudan profile, also labeled legacy, lists 1,000,000 members, 265 pastors, and 500 congregations; the profile also describes the church as present in Sudan.

Smaller reported profiles include 300,000 members and 81 pastors for the Presbyterian Church in Rwanda; 8,230 members, 21 pastors, and 29 congregations for the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Equatorial Guinea; and 1,083 members, 12 pastors, and 13 congregations for the Presbyterian Church of Liberia. These are undated current profiles accessed September 30, 2026.

The legacy labels are material: they preserve what the profiles report without turning older or separately displayed figures into a fresh national estimate.

South Asian and European profiles

The Presbyterian Church of Pakistan profile lists 400,000 members, 330 pastors, and 340 congregations. The Church of Pakistan profile lists 500,000 members and notes that its 1970 union included Presbyterian (Scottish) churches. These are different church profiles, so the two membership figures should not be added together.

In Europe, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Portugal profile lists 3,000 members, 12 pastors, and 25 congregations. The Presbyterian Church of Wales profile lists 36,251 members, 70 pastors, and 775 congregations.

The Protestant Church in the Netherlands profile lists 2,500,000 members, 3,000 pastors, and 3,000 congregations. Its profile describes the church as using a presbyterian-synodal model. That makes it relevant to a broad Presbyterian tradition comparison, while its name also signals that it is not simply a church called “Presbyterian.”

National change and member composition

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana offers dated measures beyond a single membership total. In its Annual Report: Clerk of the General Assembly 2023, covering the year under review in 2022, the church reported 1,261,413 total members, 111,617 new members added, and 9.7% membership growth. The same report said 59% of members were female and 41% were male.

The 2022 report also described the age profile: 59% of members were younger than 30, and 28% were younger than 12. Those percentages describe the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s reported membership composition for that year; they are not a general demographic profile for Presbyterian members worldwide.

A later Presbyterian Church of Ghana report, “All 21 Presbyteries of PCG see Growth” states that the church recorded 103,392 new members across all 21 presbyteries in 2024 and reported 7.57% membership growth. The 2024 figures belong to a different reporting period from the 2022 annual-report figures, so they provide a dated comparison of reported growth activity rather than a basis for unsupported interpolation.

Taken together, these country and church profiles show why “Presbyterian membership by country” is best read as a collection of named denominational measures. Some figures are dated annual statistics, some are approximately reported values, and some are undated current or legacy profiles. Keeping those distinctions visible makes the comparisons more useful for understanding Presbyterian presence in Faith & Everyday Life.
